  • This calendar schedule applies to transfer master’s student with thesis track and transfer Ph.D. student. This calendar only applies to transfer student who already completed coursework and thesis/dissertation writing at previous institution. Term A, B, C is equivalent to 4th, and 5th term of master’s student, and 5th, and 6th term of Ph.D. student.

  • Thesis/Dissertation Committee Member
  • Thesis Committee Member for Master’s Student Composition: Thesis committee is composed of 4 panel members: 1 thesis advisor and 3 panel members. At least 2 panel members should be from candidate’s department or school. Thesis Advisor:

    • Eligibility:PIC faculty member who has been approved to direct theses
    • Responsibilities:
      • Nominate 3 other panel members to committee member coordinator
      • Guide student writing a thesis, and review and evaluate student’s thesis
      • Manage other panel members to fully engage in pre-oral and oral defense.
    Other Panel Member:
    • Eligibility: University faculty member
    • Responsibilities:
      • Actively participate in pre-oral and oral defense
      • Review and evaluate student’s thesis
    Dissertation Committee Member for Ph.D. Student Composition: Dissertation committee is composed of 5 panel members: 1 dissertation advisor and 4 panel members. At least 3 panel members should be from candidate’s department or school. Dissertation Advisor:

    • Eligibility: PIC faculty member who has been approved to direct dissertations
    • Responsibilities:
      • Nominate 4 other panel members to committee member coordinator
      • Guide student writing a dissertation, and review and evaluate student’s dissertation
      • Manage other panel members to fully engage in pre-oral and oral defense.
    Other Panel Member:
    • Eligibility: University faculty member
    • Responsibilities:
      • Actively participate in pre-oral and oral defense
      • Review and evaluate student’s thesis
  • Committee Member Coordinator
    • Eligibility: A member of PIC Academic Office
    • Responsibilities:
    01. Appoint appropriate thesis and dissertation advisor for students who took comprehensive exam.
    02. Review eligibilities of potential “other panel members” nominated by thesis/dissertation advisor. Carefully review their conflict of interest with student. (“other panel members” refer to panel members who are not a thesis/dissertation advisor)
    03. Appoint appropriate “other panel members” based on thesis/dissertation advisor’s nomination.
    04. Monitor and control all procedures and activities related to thesis/dissertation committee including comprehensive exam, pre-oral defense, final oral defense, and establishing committee member.
  • Procedures to Establish a Thesis/Dissertation Committee (5 Steps)
  • 01. Student takes comprehensive exam.
    02. Committee member coordinator appoints a thesis/dissertation advisor for student who took comprehensive exam. (Deadline: within 2 weeks from comprehensive exam date)
    03. A thesis/dissertation advisor nominates other panel members to committee member coordinator. (Deadline: within 2 weeks from appointment) (IMPORTANT: Nominated panel members should submit a panel member application form at this stage)
    04. Committee member coordinator reviews eligibilities of nominated panel members and their conflict of interest with student.
    05. Committee member coordinator appoints successful panel member candidates. (Deadline: within 2 weeks from nomination)
  • Comprehensive Exam and Oral Defense
  • Master’s student with a thesis track and all Ph.D. student need to complete comprehensive exam and oral defense in order to graduate.

    COMPREHENSIVE EXAM


    Objective: Comprehensive exam tests student’s mastery of breadth and depth in a range of subject areas in and related to student’s major, including the ability to synthesize broad concepts and detailed information. When to take: Student normally take comprehensive exam at two terms before the academic term of their expected graduation. Requirements to apply: Student needs to prepare following items in order to apply for comprehensive exam.
    • Application form for comprehensive exam
    • Proof of completion of required coursework
    Requirements to take: Once applied, student needs to prepare following items in order to take comprehensive exam.
    • Concept paper of the planned thesis/dissertation
    • Payment of comprehensive exam fees

    ORAL DEFENSE


    Oral Defense is composed of three stages: thesis/dissertation (stage 1), pre-oral defense (stage 2), and final oral defense (stage 3).Based on the comprehensive exam result and concept paper, advisor and panel members will be established for thesis/dissertation writing, and pre-oral and final oral defense. Objective: Oral defense tests student’s mastery of breadth and depth in student’s research topic in and related to student’s major, including the ability to create knowledge and synthesize broad concepts and detailed information. When to proceed:After passing the comprehensive exam, student becomes eligible to proceed oral defense.

    STAGE 1. THESIS/DISSERTATION


    Student will submit a thesis/dissertation proposal to advisor and panel members, and will explain the proposal at proposal hearing. Once proposal hearing is completed, student can write thesis/dissertation in accordance with thesis/dissertation writing guidelines. The guideline can be found at PIC website, www.pic.edu.ph

    STAGE 2. PRE-ORAL DEFENSE


    Once thesis/dissertation writing is completed, student is ready for pre-oral defense. Requirements to apply: Student needs to prepare following items in order to apply for pre-oral defense.
    • Application form for pre-oral defense
    • Proof of completion of comprehensive exam (Graded comprehensive exam)
    • Proof of completion of thesis/dissertation proposal (Graded proposal)
    • Proof of completion of proposal hearing (Video recorded at the event of proposal hearing)
    Requirements to take: Student need to prepare following items in order to take pre-oral defense.
    • Completed thesis/dissertation (Electronic copy of written thesis/dissertation)
    • Payment of pre-oral defense fees

    STAGE 3. FINAL ORAL DEFENSE


    Once pre-oral is completed, student is ready for final oral defense. Requirements to apply: Student needs to prepare following items in order to apply for final oral defense.
    • Application form for final oral defense
    • Proof of completion of pre-oral defense (Video recoded at the event of pre-oral defense)
    Requirements to take: Student needs to prepare following items in order to take final oral defense.
    • 1 electronic file and 1 printed copy of revised thesis/dissertation
    • Payment of final oral defense fees
  • After Oral Defense
  • Student who completed final oral defense needs to submit a hard copy of completed version of thesis/dissertation to PIC Main Building and an electronic file to PIC Academic Office email address.
